DIRECTIONS to FIVE ASSEGAIS LODGE AND CAMPS

FIVE ASSEGAIS ESTATE: S25°48.985 E30°22.282.
Take the N12 from Johannesburg to Witbank, which joins the N4, go past
Belfast and take the SECOND turning into Machadodorp.
Go into town over the river and get to a 4 way stop by the FNB, turn
LEFT on to the R541 to BADPLAAS.
Follow the road for 17.5 kilometers and take the BLOEMFONTEIN turn of
to the RIGHT for the lodge, Candlewood and Aloe Kaya.
This becomes a gravel road, go for 2 kilometers to the T-junction turn
LEFT and follow the signs to your destination.
For PONGOLA continue straight past the Bloemfontein turn off and
continue down the Skurweberg Pass to the camp on your left.

WHAT TO BRING (HIKING CAMPS ONLY)

All the camps have firewood, toilet paper, mattresses, chairs, tables, kitchen equipment, hot water and braais. To ensure that your trip is safe and enjoyable please bring with you:

Hiking boots and socks.
Flip-flops and tekkies are not appropriate for any of the trails.
Walking stick Rain gear ␣ it is possible to experience ALL weather conditions in one day
Hat Fleece, especially in winter
Swimming costume
Sleeping bag and pillow
Towel
Water bottle. It is safe (and delicious) to drink the water on all the estates. Do not refill or drink from stagnant pools! Sunscreen
Torch
First aid kit (including plasters and antiseptic)
Insect repellent
Matches / lighter
Food and drinks for the duration of your stay
Extras – camera, binoculars, batteries etc.
You do NOT have to bring:

Mattresses
Kitchen equipment (i.e. cutlery, crockery, pots and pans)
Toilet paper
Firewood
Tables and chairs

PLEASE NOTE:

The water is safe to drink. Bring a water bottle with you.
There is parking at all the camps, with the exception of Candlewood where you will have a 10 minute walk to the camp
The roads are dirt roads. They are better than they look. In smaller cars drive with caution but it is manageable.

HONESTY SHOP

There is a small Honesty Shop at Pongola Express and God’s Window camps. It sells a few basics but you should not rely on this.
